Complete breakdown of GitHub's pricing plans for individuals, teams, and enterprises. Find the right plan for your development workflow.

Quick Summary

All GitHub Plans

Pricing terms checked September 30, 2026. The public GitHub comparison marks Team's $4/user/month and Enterprise's starting $21/user/month as first-12-month prices. Confirm your offer, billing currency and renewal quote; these are not guarantees that the same rate applies forever.

GitHub Pro vs Team: Personal Account or Organization?

Pro upgrades a personal account's private-repository features. Team is an organization purchase. Buying Pro for each individual is not a substitute for the organization's Team entitlements. Identify who owns the repositories and which controls are required before multiplying a seat price. See GitHub's account-upgrade documentation.

Enterprise Cost: Separate Seats From Usage

At the public starting rates, ten Team seats illustrate $40/month ($480 over twelve months), while ten Enterprise seats illustrate $210/month ($2,520 over twelve months). These are base-price calculations before tax, add-ons or metered usage—not contracted totals or minimum-seat claims. Compare the administration you need, then add Actions, storage, Copilot and security products as separate lines.

GitHub Actions Extra Costs

GitHub Actions come with free minutes each month. Here's what extra compute costs:

Plan Included Minutes/Month Price per Extra Minute
Free 2,000 Metered beyond allowance when billing is enabled
Pro / Team 3,000 Baseline 2-core Linux x64: $0.006/min; 2-core Windows x64: $0.010/min; macOS 3/4-core: $0.062/min. Other runner SKUs differ.
Enterprise 50,000 Metered beyond allowance

Codespaces, Packages and Security Add-ons

Codespaces has two separate meters: active compute and stored data. GitHub's current calculator starts a 2-core machine at $0.18 per hour and storage at $0.07 per GiB-month. A 5-person team using a 2-core codespace for 20 hours each week is roughly 400 active hours per month, or $72 in compute before storage. Organization and enterprise accounts do not receive the personal-account Codespaces free quota.

GitHub plan seats are only one part of the bill. Private-package usage includes plan-based storage and transfer allowances; additional GitHub Packages storage is $0.25/GB and external data transfer is $0.50/GB. Package bandwidth used inside Actions workflows is free.

ProductBilling unitCurrent treatment
GitHub PackagesStorage + external transferAllowances vary by plan; public packages and transfer within Actions have free-use rules.
GitHub CodespacesActive compute + stored GiB2-core compute starts at $0.18/hour; storage is $0.07/GiB-month. Personal free quotas do not apply to organization-owned usage.
GitHub Code SecurityUnique active committer$30/committer/month for enabled private repositories in GitHub's calculator.
GitHub Secret ProtectionUnique active committer$19/committer/month for enabled private repositories in GitHub's calculator.
GitHub CopilotSubscription seat + possible premium-request overageSeparate from the Free, Team and Enterprise source-control plan price.

Real monthly team-cost examples

TeamFixed seatsUsage exampleIllustrative total
5 developers on Team$20/monthNo overage$20/month
25 developers on Team$100/month5,000 extra standard Actions minutes, GitHub's example is $38About $138/month before other products
25 developers on EnterpriseFrom $525/monthWithin included Actions allowanceFrom $525/month before Copilot, security or Codespaces

These examples are planning estimates, not quotes. Copilot subscriptions, premium requests, Code Security, Secret Protection, Codespaces, Packages and larger runners can exceed the repository-plan seat cost.

Which Plan Should You Choose?

GitHub Free

✅ Use if: You're contributing to open source, learning to code, or running hobby projects. Unlimited public repos, all features.

❌ Skip if: You need private repos (you don't—Free includes them now), or you're a team.

GitHub Pro ($4/month)

✅ Use if: You're an individual developer working on private projects. Best value for solo developers. Gets you 3,000 Actions minutes/month.

❌ Skip if: You have a team (use Team plan instead), or you need SSO/Audit logs (use Team).

GitHub Team ($4/user/month)

✅ Use if: Your organization needs team access controls, protected-branch workflows, code owners and the larger organization allowances.

❌ Skip if: GitHub Free for organizations already covers your repository and collaboration needs.

GitHub Enterprise (from $21/user/month)

✅ Use if: You need enterprise identity, policy, audit, compliance and deployment controls. Advanced Security and Copilot remain separate products unless your contract says otherwise.

❌ Skip if: Team provides the governance and allowances your organization needs.

FAQs

Do I need to pay for private repos?

No. Current GitHub plans include unlimited private repositories. Repository availability is separate from advanced collaboration controls and usage allowances; older historical private-repository pricing is not the current offer.

Can I switch plans mid-month?

Check the plan, billing term and effective date in your account. An upgrade and a downgrade can have different billing consequences; an annual commitment is not automatically a cancellable monthly purchase.

Is there a free trial for Pro or Team?

Do not assume a universal Pro or Team trial. Use the offer actually displayed in your account, including payment and conversion terms.

Do student discounts apply?

Eligible education users should check the current GitHub Education program. Individual eligibility does not automatically establish a discounted organization contract.

What's included in GitHub Actions pricing?

GitHub Actions usage for private repositories is billed after plan allowances: Free gets 2,000 standard-runner minutes, Pro and Team 3,000, and Enterprise Cloud 50,000. Public repositories and standard self-hosted runners have separate free-use rules; larger runners are billable.
